ServSafe Handler- Safe Food Handling

This course introduces participants to the basics of safe food handling. The course explains how food can become unsafe through time-temperature abuse, cross-contamination, and improper cleaning and sanitizing, and the importance good personal hygiene plays in limiting the spread of bacteria and other dangerous pathogens. This training will also include fundementals of working on a canteen.

Shelter Field Guide Training

This training reviews the use of the FEMA Shelter Field Guide. The field guide was developed to assist shelter staff in the administration and operation of congregate care shelters. It is a supplemaent to the Shelter Operations and Simulations programs. It is recommended for anyone who may be working in a mass care shelter.

Shelter Fundamentals

Shelter Fundamentals is a basic level course that introduces the guidelines and procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster. Referencing shelter checklists, participants will work on a case study that takes them through four of the six phases of the Sheltering Cycle: Opening, Organizing, Operating and Closing. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to– • Describe the tasks of a shelter worker throughout the opening, organizing, operating and closing phases of a shelter operation. • Recall the tasks on the shelter checklists. • Describe how to complete the appropriate registration forms and make referrals for additional services, as needed. • Explain how to set-up a welcoming reception and registration area. • Identify internal and external locations for posting signs that clearly communicate shelter information. • Explain how to set up and monitor a dormitory environment that ensures resident safety and comfort. • Explain how to set up food distribution areas and monitor consumption to ensure that residents’ dietary needs are met. • Describe the importance of information sharing in a shelter environment and identify multiple communication strategies. • Explain the steps required to return a shelter to its pre-disaster condition.

Shelter Operations

Shelter Operations is designed to give participants an overview of the American Red Cross policies and procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster. The purpose of the course is to teach participants to manager shelter operations effectively and sensitively as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to: - describe the procedures for opening, operating and closing shelters; - organize available human resources to operate as a shelter operations team; - identify resources available to assist shelter workers; - organize the physical facility and material resources to meet the needs of people in the shelter.

Situational Awareness / Common Operating Picture

It is designed to improve the skills, knowledge, and capabilities of individuals and organizations involved in domestic emergency preparedness, response, and recovery. SA and COP supports the Communications and Information Management component of the National Incident Management System (NIMS). Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: •Define Situational Awareness and Common Operating Picture (SA & COP) and the relationship between the two. •Explain how SA & COP contributes to effective incident management and decision making. •Develop or contribute to plans, procedures, or processes supporting SA & COP in their own operating environment. •Understand the impact of current and emerging technologies on SA & COP.

Small Animal First Aid and CPR

Don’t be caught unaware. Many first responders will encounter a situation that will involve an animal in need of medical attention. This two hour training focuses on what to do in an emergency when there is an animal involved. The focus audience for this presentation will be: Fire, EMS, Police, Search and Rescue, and CART volunteers. Highlights of the presentation with include: • Recognizing common medical emergencies • Basic First Aid for common illnesses and injuries • Trauma stabilization • Safe handling of injured cats and dogs • Common household toxins • Hands on CPR instruction on our dummy dog “Jerry” Presentation will be followed by a question and answer period with Dr. Montealegre and veterinary technicians of RBVH-Linwood. Many fire companies and EMS have recently been provided with oxygen masks for pets. Please bring any first aid supplies you have for pets, if able, and we will make sure you are comfortable on when they should be used.
