Medical Ambulance Bus (MAB) Operational Awareness

The purpose of this course is to provide EMS personnel, and guests, with an introduction to the potential missions of the medical ambulance bus, capabilities, and inventory. This course will refer to the State of New Jersey Statewide Incident Rehabilitation Guidelines for EMS, Rehab Log, Rehab Tag, and operational items related to the medical ambulance bus.

Mental Health First Aid

Pre-Registration is required for this course. Mental Health First Aid is a 8-hour training certification course which teaches participants a five-step action plan to assess a situation, select and implement interventions and secure appropriate care for the individual, the certification program introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact and overviews common treatments. Thorough evaluations in randomized controlled trials and a quantitative study have proved the CPR-like program effective in improving trainees’ knowledge of mental disorders, reducing stigma and increasing the amount of help provided to others.

Mental Health Response to Mass Violence

Incidents of mass violence, such as the shootings in Aurora, CO and Newtown, CT, as well as the bombing at the Boston Marathon produce unique and complex psycho-social reactions in individuals and communities. This full-day program explores the types and nature of acts of mass violence, as well as the emotional and behavioral reactions to these incidents. Attention is also given to the demands on first responders and others who reach out to help. Both long- and short-term mental health effects are explored, as well as models and methods of support and intervention, and integration with Victim Service providers and other agencies responding to an act of mass crime. Objective At the conclusion of this program, individuals will be able to describe the different dynamics of incidents of mass violence, the impact of mass violence, as well as psychological first aid techniques and other strategies for providing crisis counseling in the wake of a mass violence event.
