Atlantic County Urges Residents to Stay Home and Off the Roads

Atlantic County residents are waking up to accumulating snow, increasing winds, minor coastal flooding and whiteout conditions as the county remains under a blizzard warning through 4 p.m. today with snow falling at rates of 1-3 inches in some areas near the coast.

County officials strongly advise residents to stay home and off the roads.

Travel is extremely dangerous. Most roads are snow covered and winds are blowing snow resulting in poor visibility. If you must travel, let someone know of your plans and take a charged cell phone, food, water, blanket and flashlight with you. If you become stranded, remain with your vehicle.

The Atlantic County Emergency Operations Center has been activated to coordinate countywide storm preparedness and response. No major issues were reported overnight. As of 7 AM this morning, Atlantic City Electric is reporting 5 active outages affecting 374 homes.

Residents are reminded to charge electronic devices for use in the event of a power outage. Any non-life threatening emergencies should be reported to local emergency management offices whose contact information is available at www.readyatlantic.org. Life threatening emergencies should be reported immediately to 9-1-1.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the low 20s today and drop to single digits overnight with sub-zero wind chill values.

The best advice is to stay indoors until this storm passes and continue to monitor events and heed the guidance of emergency officials. Let the road crews do their jobs with a minimum number of vehicles on the roadways.
