Flags will be flown at half-staff at all county facilities on Thursday, May 15, 2003 in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day, announced County Executive Dennis Levinson.
"Atlantic County joins our nation in honoring the dedicated men and women of the law enforcement community who sacrificed their own lives to ensure the safety and well-being of others," said Levinson.
A joint resolution was approved by Congress on October 1, 1962 that designates May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day and directs the United States flag to be flown at half-staff on all buildings and grounds to mark the occasion.
According to statistics compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, one law enforcement officer is killed nearly every other day in this country. Most of these fatalities are due to firearms and motor vehicle accidents.
