Domestic Violence Workshop

This course is being sponsored by the DHS / FLETC / Rural Policing Institute and hosted by the Atl Co Police Training Center. Program Focus: This customized workshop provides the student with ways to effectively present the topics of: Domestic Violence Basics - provides refresher information about domestic violence basics while focusing on student-centered learning principles. Evidence Gathering- provides refresher information about how to take a case to trial without relying on victim testimony while focusing on student-centered learning principles. Effectively Conduct Interviews- provide skills and techniques to effectively interview victims, suspects, and other witnesses of domestic violence incidents. Sexual Assault, Stalking, and Strangulation- provide law enforcement officers with fundamental knowledge and techniques necessary to conduct investigations of strangulation cases. Through lecture, and discussion, the students will be able to identify the principles of good investigative techniques that will enable them to better serve the victim’s need for safety, compassion, and professionalism while improving accountability. Who Should Attend: Qualified applicants must be full-time, sworn law enforcement peace officers. Eligibility: This program is being funded by the FLETC’s Rural Policing Institute. Preference for admission into this program is given to non-federal law enforcement officers or other emergency responders working in rural areas. “Rural” is defined as any area outside of a metropolitan statistical area (MSA), as defined by the Office of Management and Budget; or any jurisdiction inside of a MSA located in a county, borough, parish or land under the jurisdiction of an Indian Tribe with a population of no more than 50,000. Drug Endangered Children Investigation

This course is being offered by the DHS-Rural Policing Institute and hosted the the Atlantic County Police Training Center. Program Focus: This course is designed to give the investigator the tools necessary to collect, preserve and present evidence to the prosecutor to prove the crime of felony child abuse and neglect. Drug Endangered Children investigations falls under the purview of a federal mandate and new drug strategy from the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Specifically designed to include law enforcement officers recognizing the evidence of a crime, the collection and preservation of evidence, understanding the careful methodology required for forensic interviews of children, presenting judicial authorities with the specific components required to obtain a search/arrest warrant and completing concise literary documentation or reports to substantiate child abuse in a drug environment. Drug Recognition / Under the Influence Course

This full day course is designed to help officers identify subjects who are under the influence of substances other than alcohol. The content will help to detect impaired drivers as well as recognize signs and symptoms of impaired individuals. The course content can easily be adapted to other aspects of police work. The course will cover street drugs, prescription and over the counter medications as well as other substances of abuse. Attendees will learn how each of the seven drug categories effect clinical indicators such as eye and pupil reactions, pulse, body temperature and how to readily recognize these indicators. The course will offer an overview of the Standardized Field Sobriety tests and an introduction into the Drug Recognition Expert program. Current drug trends, paraphernalia, methods of ingestion and current case law will also be discussed. This course is being sponsored by the New Jersey Drug Recognition Expert Association. Emergency & Death Notification for Law Enforcement

This four hour workshop is appropriate for all supervisors, managers, law enforcement officers, public safety personnel and chaplains. Attendees will be briefed or reminded as to the basics in Emergency and Death Notifications. Material will be presented to help those who must notify survivors of the death of a family member or loved one due to homicide, an automobile crash, heart attack, drowning or other sudden and unexpected events. Guidelines will be discussed and demonstrated to assist notifying survivors effectively and sensitively; including tips on what not to say or do. Class size is limited by available classroom space. The dress code is Uniform or casual business attire. Note: A related one day workshop is being presented re: “Trauma Survival for Law Enforcement & Corrections”, on the preceding day Aug. 15, 2013, at the academy. See Academy web-site for details.

Emergency Vehicle Operation for Patrol

This is a refresher course for Basic Emergency Vehicle Operations for current law enforcement officers. The first day of training will be a classroom presentation reviewing the Attorney General Vehicle Pursuit Guidelines, Legal Updates, Vehicle Maintenance and Vehicle Dynamics and will be held at the Police Training Center. The second and third day will be practical hands on training and will be held at Bader Field in Atlantic City.

Encountering Mental Illness as a First Responder

This one day course is designed to familiarize officers and other first responders with current best practices regarding responses to people with mental illnesses. Emphasis will be on safe, effective and professional concerns of the first responder when handling individuals with mental illness in crisis, distress or other circumstances. Instruction will utilize practical demonstrations and exercises approaching and communicating with individuals suffering from Mood, Anxiety, Personality and Psychotic Disorders along with Alzheimer’s Disease and other mental health issues. Facts and myths, signs and symptoms, helpful “dos and don'ts” and safe practices will be addressed.

ERT Certification Course

The Atlantic County Association of Chiefs of Police is hosting a 40-hour Emergency Response Team member certification course. The course is designed for new ERT members who have joined or are going to join the Atlantic County Response Teams. Equipment needed: handgun and/or long gun, ammo-500 handgun rounds, 300 rifle/subgun rounds, 100 shotgun rounds, targets, PT gear and tactical equipment including but not limited to: boots, BDU’s, helmet, goggles, body armor, gloves and flashlight. Escort Hold Program for Law Enforcement Officers
