Assisting Children, Adolescents and Young Adults in Disasters

This workshop is intended for disaster mental health responders and others who may seeks to provide psychosocial support to children, adolescents and young adults in times of disaster and crisis. The program explores unique age and developmental challenges associated with disaster survival and recovery, as well as addressing specific approaches to intervention. Specific factors affecting infants, school-aged children, teens and college students during response and recovery are explored, as well as basic principles for assisting youth during stressful events. Objectives • Participants will be able to describe the unique challenges faced by children during and after a disaster. • Participants will be able to discuss the impact of disasters on youth ranging in age from infancy to young adulthood, as well as strategies and techniques for providing meaningful psychosocial support.
