Flags will be flown at half-staff at all county facilities on Wednesday, May 15, 2002 in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day, announced County Executive Dennis Levinson.
This action is consistent with a joint resolution approved by Congress on October 1, 1962 designating May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day and directing the United States flag to be flown at half-staff on all buildings and grounds to mark the occasion.
"Atlantic County will lower its flags in memory of the dedicated men and women of the law enforcement community who sacrificed their own lives to ensure the safety and well-being of others," said Levinson.
According to statistics compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Inc., an average of one law enforcement officer is killed nearly every other day in this country with most fatalities due to firearms and motor vehicle accidents.
