Public Invited to September 11th 'Spirit of America' Commemorative Program

Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson would like to invite the public to a community tribute to the victims and heroes of September 11th on Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at 10:30 AM at the Sandcastle Stadium, Albany Avenue, Atlantic City.

The "Spirit of America" Commemorative Program will include a multi-vehicle Homeland Security Caravan traveling from Shore Mall to the stadium, a fly-over by the U.S. Coast Guard, musical selections by Miss America contestants and the Second Baptist Church Youth Choir, a Scroll of Heroes, and tributes by police, fire, EMT and Coast Guard representatives and public officials.

"This event has been planned to honor all those who lost their lives and all those who courageously came to their aid," said Levinson. "It is our hope that we will find comfort and support in marking this first anniversary together as a community."

Approximately 3,500 students from Atlantic County schools will be in attendance. On their behalf, Christopher Grusemeyer, a senior at Buena Regional High School, and Shalonna Walton, a senior at Atlantic City High School, will offer their reflections on the September 11 tragedy. Grusemeyer and Walton were nominated by their school administrators for their scholastic achievements, citizenship and participation in extracurricular activities.

For those unable to attend, the Millennium Broadcasting Group will broadcast the event live on each of its four FM stations: WKOE, 106.3 FM; WMIX, 97.3 FM; WPUR, 107.3 FM; and WFPG, 96.9 FM.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Atlantic County Department of Public Safety at (609) 407-6739.
