Call for Artist Proposals

The Atlantic County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs has posted a "Call for Artist Proposals" for the "Beacons by the Sea - Festival of Lighthouses" to benefit arts and education in Atlantic and Cape May counties. A number of communities across the nation have had great success with similar projects, such as - the Chicago Cows - the Orlando Lizards - the Lexington horses. These have raised awareness of the arts and artists in the community while helping to raise funds for local arts and education programs. This project is open to all artists in New Jersey.

Artists are asked to submit proposals for executing original designs on prefabricated five foot tall fiberglass lighthouses. These lighthouses will be exhibited throughout the two counties during the summer of 2003. At the end of that time, they will be auctioned to the public and proceeds will benefit local arts and education organizations. Proposals may be for work in acrylic, enamel, latex or alkyd paint; ceramics, mosaic or any materials that can be appropriately applied to a fiberglass surface, keeping in mind that it should be suitable to remain outdoors. Proposals need to be submitted by December 16, 2002.

Proposal forms are available at the Hammonton, Mays Landing, Ventnor and Somers Point libraries. Forms may also be found online at www.aclink.org/culturalaffairs. For more information please contact the Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs at 609-646-8699 Ext. 6314 or email: cmasonpurdie@acmail.aclink.org.

Businesses that are interested in sponsoring the creation of a lighthouse should contact the Atlantic Cape Community College Advancement Programs Office at 609-343-4901. All arts and education organizations that want to participate and become the beneficiary of a lighthouse creation should do the same.
