Egg Harbor Township resident Mary Lancaster was recently appointed by County Executive Dennis Levinson to a three-year term on the Atlantic County Library Advisory Commission where she plans to honor the memory of her 4-year old son, Michael “Cubby” Lancaster, by sharing his love of reading and learning with others.
“Cubby” Lancaster was one of the youngest and most enthusiastic patrons of the county’s Egg Harbor Township library branch, according to Levinson.
“He loved to read and participate in story times and his infectious smile and outgoing personality helped him quickly befriend staff members,” he said.
Cubby died as a result of an accidental drowning in 2016 leaving behind his parents and two sisters. His family dedicated a bench and collection of children’s books with donations from friends and relatives so that others could also find joy in reading in “Cubby’s Corner.”
“I am pleased to appoint Mrs. Lancaster to the Library Commission. She and her family suffered an unimaginable loss, but they have found a wonderful way to remember Cubby. I am confident she will be a great asset to the commission,” said Levinson.
In cooperation with the Atlantic County Library Foundation, Mrs. Lancaster hopes to add a “Cubby’s Corner” in each of the other eight county library branches.
